The bun's in the oven... or something like that...

This has been a tough time for webseries(es). Tough because Quarterlife, the darling of the internet webseres destined to go on to greatness on NBC completely bombed on its first outing into prime time. When I say bomb I'm not being melodramatic here. It bombed so bad that it was NBC's lowest rated premiere in the last 17 years. Stink bomb.

Tough also because Fremantle Media, the bizillion dollar corporation behind the American Idol franchise buys webisodes for pennies, well not pennies, but dollars... but not many.

How big is American Idol? Here's a quote from Fremantle themself: "One of the most successful formats in the world, local versions of Idols have now aired in over 40 territories. In the USA, Idols is the No.1 series with an audience of 37 million viewers. The global number of votes for Idols has now exceeded three billion!" Three billion viewers and they offer $1000 per webisode. Not much confidence there from the mega-corp for the little Chihuahua webseries that could.

Then there's internet advertising... which we haven't been able to capitalize on yet.

And then the Killer Chihuahua franchise. You know - t-shirts, mugs, thong underwear. All emblazoned with Cyndi giving a nasty growl as her eyes laser beam red burn holes in your Converse. (maybe we could get Converse to make KILLER CHIHUAHUA! shoes??? ... Ahem, what franchise?

So... with all the non-equity of these non-events going on Katy and I have had our minds at work cooking up other projects. A couple of short films in development. A feature script I wrote. A spec commercial for a local business we are gearing up to shoot. Life has gone on.

On and on and our mind's been elsewhere. Never mind the fact that we already have 5 more episodes of Killer Chihuahua! in the can and mostly edited - mostly ready to post. Never mind that. Killer Chihuahua! hasn't been at the forefront of our creative consciousness.

Until this morning. This morning I got an email from revver.com saying:

"Congrats!! Youre on the home page.....great video. Keep them coming and feel free to let me know when you upload more.

thanks,
Alex

It was our very own bonus episode "Tasty or Terrible"

Did we all suffer from opening the oven door too soon? Did we, did Katy, did I, did mega-conglomerate Fremantle Media throw in the towel too soon on the webseries experience? Do any of us actually know what we are doing?

I don't know. I do know it felt good that Revver likes our stuff. What does that mean? What will that mean?

I don't know.

The bun's in the oven.
